A matching activity to encourage little fingers to match the contents of 10 little pots containing different textures on a wooden base board. Nice chunky pieces and vibrant colours to help tactile defensive children feel and sort in a fun and rewarding way.
Touch and feel is a sensory game. Young children will enjoy the experience of feeling and matching the different materials. Older children can try and match the right cup in the right spot in the tray whilst blindfolded!

Perhaps start by just removing the four discs on the top row of the board. Take your child's hand and help him feel the texture on the disc and on the board with the tip of his finger. Describe the sensation to him - oh isn't that furry, fluffy or rough.
To simplify this activity further talk just about the colours to start with For example "Here's the red one - where does that fit? - Can you see the green one? Build up to removing all 10 pots and encouraging your child to sort by colour or by texture. Perhaps place the discs in a cloth bag and encourage him to put his hand in and pull one out guessing the texture as he does so.
You can also encourage your child to find items around the house or classroom with similar textures.

This activity can help a child to learn to distinguish between 10 different textures and to match them. A child can have lots of fun on his own sorting and matching the discs or in a small group to practice turn taking.
